The angel Gabriel tells Mary “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.” In Matthew 1:21 during Joseph’s first dream the angel instructs Joseph: “you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”.

JANUARY
Holy Name of Jesus
January is the month for the Holy Name of Jesus. Following the New Year, the celebration of the Holy Name of Jesus formally begins on January 3rd; all prayers at this time are to give honor and thanks for His name, which represents the magnitude of His love and His mission.
The first nine days of January are the last days of Christmas, represented by the liturgical color white. Following the ninth day is the beginning of Ordinary Time that continues throughout the month; January is represented by the liturgical color green.
We celebrate the Holy Name of Jesus in the hope of a glorious resurrection and to be thankful for the hope of receiving the bounty of the eternal Harvest of Heaven.

Everybody may offer additional prayers throughout January for personal devotion and to help strengthen the relationship with God. These prayers are helpful to connect with the time of year; anyone can pray at any time throughout the month. The Liturgical Calendar guides us in prayer for the Saints and obligation days within each liturgical season. These prayers are the categories and Liturgical Months and Prayers and Devotions.
